What To Expect
It is important to be prepared for your adventure aboard the MV Coastal Explorer. With this in mind, we have come up with a few guidelines to help you organize prior to departure.

Weather Conditions
When taking to the waters in Newfoundland, it's strongly advised to be prepared for any season of the year, as weather conditions can change quickly, especially on the water. Make sure the bag you bring aboard with you has warm clothing, outerwear that will keep you dry, shoes that will give you solid footing on the deck, sunscreen, a hat, and sun glasses.

The Waters
The waters of Newman Sound & Smith Sound are generally no more choppy than any large lake. This is due to the sounds being sheltered by the land. You will not experience the often rough waters of the Atlantic Ocean in Newman or Smith Sounds.

On-board Facilities
The Coast Guard-certified MV Coastal Explorer is fully equipped with all the features to make you feel as comfortable as possible including:

  • Ample seating areas in the main cabin
  • Full washroom & shower
  • Fresh water aboard
  • Furnace in main cabin
  • Electric / Propane refrigerator
  • Microwave oven
  • And much more

What To Bring

There is an old joke in Newfoundland, "If you don't like the weather- wait a minute"!

Newfoundland temperatures can range from 10º Celsius (50ºF) overnight to 30º Celsius (86ºF) during our warmest summer day. But you can always be sure that it will be a bit cooler at sea, so the best thing is to come prepared. The best strategy is to layer your clothing. Remember that the day will be more fun and productive if you are comfortable and dry.
